At the end of the day, this gang is a family.
And a family means everyone gets to stay together, by any means necessary. Both Mackey and JD will ensure it.
Much of NCIS: Sydney Season 3, Episode 5, was a fairly straightforward case. But it provided time for lovable DeShawn to shine and official confirmation that we get to keep both Blue and Trigger.
All of that makes me a happy camper.
I’m still very curious about Mackey, this military cover-up, and just how much risk she’s in, because she isn’t confiding in her team at all about what’s happening.
The hour goes out of its way to remind us of how much of a family this group has become. They go above and beyond for one another, and we see that with both Blue and Trigger.
Of course, NCIS: Sydney Season 3 Episode 2 outlined the best when the team took on a whole cult to rescue Blue and bring her back to them.
It even required them to put aside their displeasure and betrayal over the fact that this woman, whom they’ve worked alongside for years, was a complete and utter mystery to them.
However, what was most evident was how JD led the charge in so many aspects of this.
He felt the most betrayed out of everyone when he learned the truth. And he hasn’t hidden how hurt he is by the convoluted nature of things with Blue’s real identity and how that affects their professional positions.
However, he’s also the person who ends the hour by sliding that application across the bar to a friend and calling in a favor to ensure that their little Bluebird, who, on paper, under her own name, isn’t technically qualified for the gig, gets to stay with them anyway.
She’s not supposed to be anywhere near NCIS with her qualifications.
It’s remarkable when you consider how skilled she is. It speaks volumes about how a very rigid idea of qualifications can keep very talented people out of positions where they can thrive.
Blue has spent this entire time since her return showing how invaluable she is to the team. They can’t actually function without her. It was amusing to see them find ways to navigate around her unofficial status.
She was like a ghost haunting the halls, with them not acknowledging her help but also welcoming it at every turn.
And similarly, Trigger has had that effect as well. For a bit, they were making it seem like he was fumbling through this position. He has been this “broken egg” that needed to land somewhere for reasons we still don’t know.
However, despite Mackey’s tendency to get on his nerves and his background of challenging authority and supposedly clashing with people, he has been a great addition.
I don’t know why Trigger is there and why JD has to essentially babysit him, taking him off the hands of another agency.
I don’t care either. He’s a good egg, not a broken one, and he’s proven himself time and again. I love him, and I’m glad we get to keep him.
However, I am curious about how his mysterious background may factor into things, such as the Mackey conspiracy. Who knows?
The point in all of this is that JD doesn’t mind bending rules, advocating for those he values and cares about, and he will ride to the ends of the earth for his people. So that’s why it’s particularly frustrating that Mackey isn’t confiding in him.
She shared that she’s on this kill list with her American colleague, but not the people who spend day in and out with her, who could be in the line of fire because she is. What gives?
And how long can she go on hiding this secret?
It looms over everything, and it’s keeping me on edge because I don’t want to see anything bad happen to Mackey, and I worry about the fallout when the truth comes out, and all the rest of the team will see is that she didn’t trust them.
There’s no other way for them to perceive her actions. They’ll have all the faith in the world that she isn’t guilty of any war crimes because it’s not in her character — it’s the lack of trust that could erode the team that has become a tight-knit family.
Speaking of trust, I appreciate how this case highlighted DeShawn’s best traits. For one, he’s incredibly trustworthy. He’s the guy who will put you at ease and whom you’ll take a chance on.
DeShawn is also great at connecting with people. The ease with which he built up this dynamic with Rana made me smile. He’s especially great with kids and teens.
The more time we spend with DeShawn on a personal level, the more I want to get to know him. We NEED more DeShawn background! I’m craving it!
I also loved seeing him be such a chess geek.
The case itself had some interesting twists and turns, as it involved Rana’s Baba exposing a spy organization, and the information Felix had was what ultimately led to his death. Putting a flash drive in a pawn was ingenious, I must say.
There was a great deal of tension, especially with them taking Rana.
It wasn’t the most compelling case they’ve had thus far. Instead, it was the team’s inner workings and what looms over the season that had a more pronounced presence.
Which is why I still have to ponder the Mackey conspiracy. Do you guys have any theories? Are you as nervous as I am about what’s to come?
