The purported quote was a second-hand story by a podcast presenter who said he attended a dinner hosted by the younger Trump. We have reached out to Donald Trump’s spokesperson to confirm whether this recounting of events was accurate.

In October 2024, a quote attributed to Barron Trump, son of former U.S. President Donald Trump, resurfaced online. The former president’s youngest son reportedly hosted a dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he allegedly joked: “Who would ever eat food with a silver spoon, mine was gold.”

In short, the claim emerged from a podcast host who described having dinner with Barron when he made the joke. Snopes has reached out to the Trump campaign to confirm the podcast host’s version of events. Until then, this story is rated as a research-in-progress.

The story about the former president’s son was first shared in early April 2024 on the PBD Podcast, a current affairs and business podcast. Hosted by Patrick Bet-David, an entrepreneur, it also featured Fox News anchor Jesse Waters, fellow host Adam Sosnick, entrepreneur Tom Ellsworth, and comedian Vincent Oshana.

The story began (around the 1:31:56 timestamp) with Bet-David sharing a photograph of himself with Barron and describing how he was invited by the younger Trump to Mar-a-Lago for dinner. The hosts mentioned how Barron had just turned 18 and was preparing to go to university.

The full transcript (at 1:34:19) including the anecdote in question is below:

Patrick Bet-David: I don’t know who starts telling the story [at dinner], saying: “Yeah, you know my dad comes from trailer homes” [CROSSTALK] and everybody’s kind of talking about their sob story and then Barron’s like: “Yeah, same here. I mean I was born in a penthouse of a building all the way at the top. Life was hard.” [He] talked about being fed by a silver spoon: “Who would ever eat food with a silver spoon, mine was gold.”

The host shared the anecdote to compliment the younger Trump, illustrating what he described as Barron’s humor and wit.

However, it was a second-hand report that did not come from the president’s son himself, nor has it yet been verified by any other attendees present.

It has not been possible to independently verify the anecdote so far, but we have reached out to the Trump campaign to learn if this version of Bet-David’s account is accurate. We will update this story if we get more information.

In September 2024, Barron Trump began his first week of college at New York University. He stayed away from the limelight during his father’s presidency and reportedly declined to be a delegate at the Republican National Convention in May 2024 due to “prior commitments.”
