It’s the morning of the U.S. presidential election, and here I am, compiling a list of the top comics to buy for November 6, and fortunately there are plenty of great books this week to take your mind off things, if that’s what you’re after. I was particularly struck by the diversity in this week’s bunch of titles. Check out my five favorites below, along with the usual set of release lists, and … enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for November 6, 2024

Aliens Vs. Avengers #2
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Esad Ribic
Colorist: Ive Svorcina
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Overwhelmed by Xenomorphs, the survivors abandon their home planet!
But so many are dead. So many wounded. And a terrifying few CHANGED.
The Avengers must avenge.
Why It’s Cool: It’s a Jonathan Hickman take on Alien that also features a Jonathan Hickman take on Avengers, all brought to life with amazing and brutal artwork by the team of Esad Ribic and Ive Svorcina. This is a complex, excellent, and high-production comic, and it is absolutely blowing me away with its entertaining twists, action, and ideas.
Price: $7.99

FML #1
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: David Lopez
Colorist: Cris Peter
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
A genre-busting, apocalyptic odyssey about a group of metal kids who face a medley of bizarre foes and encounters in Portland, Oregon during a worldwide pandemic. Riley is a teen that sketches out his heavy metal future with a ballpoint pen between monster movies and band practice. But musical stardom needs to compete with high school, the temper of a former Riot Grrrl mother, the morbid obsessions of a goth sister, and the eccentricities of bandmates that threaten to drive him and everyone around him insane. The balance gets harder after a ritual during a party in Portland’s Forest Park causes him to wake up one day to discover that the creatures, witchcraft, and metal world he’s obsessed with may be a bit closer to home than he preferred.
Why It’s Cool: This is a complex comic about a family that does wonderful things with genre and visual storytelling. It’s a confident comic with a smart story that knows how to use its medium. And from start to finish, it is just absolutely brimming with style and charm.
Price: $4.99

Plastic Man No More #3
Writer: Christopher Cantwell
Artist: Alex Lins, with Jacob Edgar
Colorist: Marcelo Maiolo
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
Plastic Man and Woozy suffer a bit of a…setback…when trying to capture one of the Metal Men. Well, setback is putting it mildly, and now there’s really no turning back toward the superheroes they once called allies. As his body grows increasingly more unstable, Plastic Man must turn to a villainous ally in hopes of constructing the weapon that could cure him–no matter how slim the odds of success…
Why It’s Cool: The best (and probably darkest) superhero character study of the year continues this week in the pages of this one. I am absolutely loving this comic, one of those nuanced takes on a deep bench superhero character that finally gives them their due. The dual artist concept continues to pay off, and the writing is as good as it gets. Don’t miss this one.
Price: $4.99

One For Sorrow #1
Story, Art, Colors: Jamie McKelvie
Colors: Courtney Vokey
Letters: Ariana Maher
Publisher: DSTLRY
London, 1900. The capital hums with the energy of the new era, but something darker lurks beneath the surface. A monstrous figure stalks the city’s criminal underworld at night, leaving a trail of bloody corpses in its wake. Rumors about the mysterious killer spread like wildfire. It’s a demon. A phantom. An angel of vengeance.
Why It’s Cool: I knew this book was going to look good because it’s Jamie McKelvie, but I simply was not prepare for just how immersive and complex this comic would feel. It’s a really smart book with a fantastic premise and unpredictable-yet-earned twists. I absolutely loved it, and can’t wait to see where this story is headed.
Price: $8.99

Saga #70
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Fiona Staples
Letterer: Fonografiks
Publisher: Image Comics
People change.
Why It’s Cool: I’ll be honest — unlike the other books on this list, I don’t get to read Saga before it comes out. However, the book has been as strong as ever in this arc. Plus, this cover not only looks great, but speaks to one of the more interesting plot lines that the creative team has been developing, now 70 full issues into the run of this title. Simply put, Saga remains a must read.
Price: $3.99
