At least three people have been killed in new Israeli attacks in Lebanon, Lebanese media reported on Thursday.
The Israeli military said it attacked several members of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia in the south of the neighbouring country while they were transporting weapons.
Lebanon’s state news agency NNA, quoting the country’s Health Ministry, reported that three people were killed in an attack on a vehicle in the area.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also said that a Hezbollah commander had been killed in a separate attack elsewhere in southern Lebanon. He was responsible for “numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops,” it said on Telegram.
A ceasefire has been in place between Israel and Hezbollah since November.
According to the agreement, Hezbollah is to withdraw behind the Litani River, which is located about 30 kilometres north of the country’s border. The incident in which three people were killed occurred just north of the river, while the attack on the commander took place further south.
Israel views any presence of Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon as a violation of the ceasefire. However, Israel has also been accused of not fully complying with the agreement.
After launching a ground invasion of southern Lebanon in October, Israel vacated most of its positions in the neighbouring country in February. However, Israeli troops remain at five strategic points, which the Lebanese government considers a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Israeli military exercises near the border have recently fuelled concerns in Lebanon that the war could start again.
