Hacks has quickly become a widely beloved show in the comedy world.
Season 4 recently finished airing. It was a wild ride with plenty of shocking twists and turns.
Nobody really knew what to expect from the finale. Just like many of the Hacks’ finales, there were unexpected developments that will impact Deborah and Ava’s future.
Fortunately, Hacks has a confirmed Season 5.
Considering that the show has consistently delivered incredible plotlines, there’s no question that the upcoming episodes will continue to bring more surprises for the main characters.
And of course, since all the side characters are connected to Deborah, their arcs will be affected by the changes in Season 4.
With this in mind, let’s take a look back at Season 4 and the season finale to see what we can expect in the next season.
Deborah and Ava’s Relationship in Hacks
Ava and Deborah have a rocky relationship at the start of Season 4.
Deborah holds a grudge against Ava for blackmailing her into giving Ava the head writer job. This resulted in heated conflict between the two.
The fighting finally got so bad Ava had to quit the job. However, the two made up and began working together again.
In the season finale, Deborah seems to be pulling away from Ava yet again.
She stops listening to Ava’s advice and becomes disinterested in writing with her. She even goes so far as to dismiss Ava and tell her to leave Singapore to go back to the United States alone.
Their relationship falls apart again over the months covered by the finale.
However, this all turns on its head when Ava believes that Deborah has died, as reported by a false TMZ article.
This event reunites the two and reinvigorates Deborah into committing to comedy yet again.
Deborah also finally becomes attentive to Ava again. Rather than brushing Ava off or actively attacking Ava, she’s finally working with her friend again.
The finale restores Deborah and Ava’s status as a team.
Even though they may have their disagreements, Deborah and Ava have been the iconic dynamic duo of Hacks for a long time. Their beef with each other in Season 4 all cumulated to their strong relationship by the end of the finale.
It’s such a relief to see the two working together and see how everything they went through during Season 4 affects their relationship in Season 5.
Potential Future Career Directions for Deborah and Ava
Since Hacks is about Deborah and Ava’s careers in comedy, Season 4 covered their changing work life.
In Hacks Season 4, this pair worked on Deborah’s new late night show.
At first glance, it seemed like their work might have been similar to the stand-up work they did in previous seasons.
However, late-night reached a larger audience, and they both faced a lot of pressure to make sure the show got to the number one spot.
But Deborah quits the show after the head of the network threatens to fire Ava.
Unfortunately, she can’t return directly to stand-up comedy since she signed an agreement. So, she and Ava run to Singapore to perform stand-up with a language loophole.
As mentioned earlier, both Deborah and Ava realize they can’t waste time in Singapore performing old material after the TMZ article.
The season finale ends with both women promising to fully return to comedy. They don’t specify what exactly they plan to do, though.
The world of comedy is expansive. Considering that Deborah likely won’t return to late night, that avenue of work doesn’t seem to be an option.
There’s a possibility that Deborah and Ava will return to stand-up. After all, most of Deborah’s life has been dedicated to the craft.
But the finale leaves space for Deborah and Ava to try something new.
This is especially true since Deborah can’t perform stand-up in the United States; she and Ava likely will have to cook up some creative ideas to keep their careers alive.
The Hacks Season 4 finale sets up countless possibilities for Season 5. And we can’t wait to see where the show will go next.
