Mike McFarland, the prolific and beloved voice actor and director, has been diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. McFarland first underwent surgery in January to remove a brain tumor, followed by another in April to treat an infection. But the fight isn’t over yet.
McFarland is best known for his voice work as Master Roshi in the Dragon Ball franchise, Jean Havoc in Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Jean Kirschtein in Attack on Titan, among dozens of other roles spanning decades.
He has also directed and produced powerhouse series such as Tokyo Ghoul, Attack on Titan, and Fullmetal Alchemist, and contributed to script adaptations. If you’re a fan of English-dubbed anime, chances are McFarland has touched something you love.
After news of McFarland’s tumor surfaced in January, fellow voice actors Brandon McInnis and J. Michael Tatum launched a GoFundMe to help cover his care and hire a live-in medical assistant. Following his glioblastoma diagnosis, McFarland moved to a skilled nursing facility, where he continues to undergo treatment and receive care.
As of writing, the GoFundMe has reached 93% of its goal—an impressive milestone, but not quite enough. Every donation helps ensure McFarland receives the quality treatment he needs, and your support means so much. Please consider contributing to the cause.
