The running joke in Community is that it’ll get six seasons and a movie.
The show fulfilled that six-season prophecy during its run on NBC from 2009 until 2015.
Fans were very excited to hear that the Community movie was officially announced in 2022, with production expected to start in 2024.
But over the past few years, the timeline has become increasingly delayed, and there’s only been sporadic news that creator Dan Harmon and the cast have shared.
At this point, I think it’s time to face the cold, hard truth: it might be time to accept that the Community movie is never happening.
Community Already Has an Ending
Many fans agree that while Community received six seasons, the last one and a half weren’t the show’s best.
This is because two of the main cast members left the show in the middle of Season 5: Donald Glover (who played Troy Barnes) and Chevy Chase (who played Pierce Hawthorne).

After the departure of those two, the show notably dropped in quality as the chemistry between the cast became imbalanced.
Therefore, Community Season 6 felt like they were dragging the show on for much longer than it needed to run.
Making a movie would simply solidify the fact that Community has already concluded and doesn’t need to stay alive in this new format.
Plus, Community is rarely mentioned in conversations about sitcoms anymore, since the show ended about 10 years ago.
Of course, the series’ dedicated fan following cannot be understated, but a devoted fan base doesn’t mean that the show is getting constant cultural relevancy.

That’s why the TV format works so well — we can always rewatch our favorite episodes if we’re missing our favorite Greendale students.
The Community Cast Moved On
There’s no denying that Community has helped bring some of the cast the fame they have now.
Actors like Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, and Joel McHale had their chance to shine on Community, while more well-known actors like Ken Jeong and Donald Glover became even more high-profile.
After the show ended, all of the community stars have gone on to do various high-profile projects.
For example, Joel McHale now plays the lead on Fox’s Animal Control.

Alison Brie has also been going viral lately thanks to the promo for Together, the movie that she stars in with her partner, Dave Franco.
Most obviously, Donald Glover has risen to massive stardom in the past decade for his work on Atlanta and as a rapper.
So, all of the cast clearly have moved on to bigger and better things, which makes the option of returning to do a Community movie much less appealing for them.
While I’m sure they would love to reunite and see each other, the time they would have to take out of their respective schedules just to perform fan service might not be as enjoyable.
By Now, a Film Feels Unlikely

I’ve enjoyed seeing the cast shine as their characters on Community, but I’ve also appreciated their work outside of the show.
After all, Danny Pudi’s performance as Brad Bakshi on Mythic Quest has to be one of my favorites.
Because I’m a massive fan of Community, I recognize the importance of celebrating the cast’s work after the show, as well as appreciating the show for its reign when it was on air and the many years that the fanbase has kept the show alive in pop culture.
Maybe six seasons were enough after all. And the movie? Perhaps it’s time to let it go.
