It’s been quite a long road for the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated series from Marvel Studios. Back in 2021, Marvel’s What If…? debuted an episode that introduced an alternate universe featuring zombified versions of various heroes with spinoff series teased. Four years later, the promised Marvel Zombies series is set to premiere in just a few weeks on September 24 on Disney+. Today Marvel unveiled a trailer and details.
The concept of Marvel Zombies made its first appearance in the “Crossover” arc of Ultimate Fantastic Four #21-23 that writer Mark Millar and artist Greg Land teased the first-ever interaction between the Ultimate version of the characters and the original Earth-616 only to pull the rug under fans and reveal it was actually a trick by Earth-2149, a world inhabited by undead versions of your favorite Marvel heroes.
The following year Marvel tapped writer Robert Kirkman (a no-brainer considering his acclaimed work creating the aforementioned Walking Dead) and artist Sean Phillips to launch a Marvel Zombies miniseries. It was a huge success spawning a litany of sequels and projects with various creators over the last two decades.
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess whether or not the Blade film starring Mahershala Ali as the titular character will ever get off the ground. As Deadpool & Wolverine taught us, “There’s only been one Blade. There will only ever be one Blade.” Perhaps the closest we’ll ever see Blade in the MCU is his appearance in this animated series. Though the design is clearly based on Ali, the character who will go by the moniker Blade Knight will be voiced by Todd Williams.
So, you survived the zombie apocalypse. Super. Now who’s going to stop the Avengers from feasting on your brains?
After the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, a desperate group of survivors discover the key to bringing an end to the super-powered undead, racing across a dystopian landscape and risking life and limb to save their world.
