Brilliant Minds Wastes No Time Addressing the Jacob Mystery — And We’re Excited!

When the promotional trailer for Brilliant Minds Season 2 came out, there was a concern about one particular character: Dr. Jacob Nash.

He wasn’t spotted anywhere in the trailer, not even a glimpse.

Now, yes, I initially worried about what it meant, as we quickly met Dr. Charlie Porter, who seemed to take Jacob’s position.

However, the Brilliant Minds premiere images settled my fears a little.

Sure enough, Jacob Nash was there, but he was wearing a different set of scrubs, which suggested that he would be in a different part of the hospital.

Jacob’s ED Rotation Is Exciting

Something to remember is that the interns are, in fact, interns.

That means they will spend time in other departments as they figure out which field of medicine they want to specialize in.

Just because they currently love what they’re doing with Dr. Oliver Wolf doesn’t mean that that is the right part of the hospital for them, and even if it is, they still need to experience every part of the hospital.

In Brilliant Minds Season 2, Jacob experiences the emergency department, which has allowed the series to introduce a new doctor, Dr. Anthony Thorne.

We’ll get to see Jacob in a completely different light in the ED, as he has to treat people within minutes rather than the days that he would get with Wolf.

However, this still opens the door for him to interact with the other interns, as we saw in the Brilliant Minds Season 2 premiere.

The bond that the four formed throughout the first season of Brilliant Minds is unbreakable, and they will continue to find time to catch up throughout the day, even if it’s a quick two minutes in the hallway.

This Allows Jacob and Viewers to Experience a Different Side of Medicine

One of the great things about Jacob’s new position in the hospital is that we’re able to see a different side of the hospital.

Thorne made it clear that he treats many people in the corridors, and he has to make some snap judgments and decisions due to the nature of emergency medicine.

At the same time, he needs to consult with other doctors, and we quickly saw Jacob suggest a neuro consult when MMA fighter Tommy came in with a potential concussion.

The series can continue to bring more intriguing cases, and we get to see how the departments work together (or not at all).

It also allows more of Katie in the series, as she is a paramedic and is most likely to be seen in the ED.

Jacob Gets a Strong Arc and Potential for Growth

Out of all the interns, I do feel like Jacob got the short end of the stick during Brilliant Minds Season 1, and sometimes, it felt like he was a bit of an afterthought.

There was one episode that deeply focused on him in fear that he had CTE after his multiple concussions, and then that was it, but it’s something many of us want to see explored in Brilliant Minds Season 2.

Throughout the rest of the season, we saw a little about how he was interested in Ericka and angry at Van for being with her, but that didn’t create the drama as expected — and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as a love triangle is just overdone at this point.

However, Jacob didn’t really get the chance to grow as a character throughout the first season, and that can all change in this one.

By doing a rotation in the ED, he has another teacher to learn from, and this could open his eyes to the world of medicine around him.

He (and we) get the opportunity to see how patients progress from being unaware of their condition to receiving the initial treatment and then the follow-up treatment they need.

We Also Gain More Insight into His Character

At the same time, he can connect with more patients, as he offers sympathy and maybe even empathy when they’re at their lowest.

In the premiere, he even opened up a little more about how he understood MMA fighter Tommy’s dad, sharing how his own dad is similar.

In fact, he even shared that he’s barely heard from his dad since he had to quit playing football.

This is something that could come up again, as it’s not so easy to handle the fact that your parent loved you for who you were and who you could be in one field, and not the person who you have become after injury or illness.

Paging Dr. Thorne

With all of this, Jacob’s story has opened up a new world for this character.

We had the opportunity to meet Dr. Anthony Thorne, who is clearly in charge of the ED, and he has been working there for some time.

This is just the first time we’ve met him, but he has a history with some of the doctors, and I could have sworn there was a potential spark between him and Dr. Carol Pierce.

New characters always bring new dynamics, and while being a teacher to Jacob, he is also a different type of boss and doctor, opening our worlds and creating more drama in Brilliant Minds.
