Classes are starting up yet again at Abbott Elementary!

This beloved ABC sitcom is finally returning for Season 5, just after it received several nominations at the Emmys this past month.

Although the show was only on hiatus during the summer, with Season 4 wrapping up this past spring, the wait for new episodes has been challenging.

Especially since Abbott Elementary is such a comfort show, it’s great that the show has such quick turnarounds between seasons.

Ahead of the season premiere on October 1st, here’s a list of 7 things we’d like to see happen on the new Abbott Elementary season.

1. Ava and O’Shon’s Romance

While Janine and Gregory might be the ultimate endgame couple, Ava and O’Shon have to take the cake as the new cutest couple on the show.

Throughout Abbott Elementary Season 4, their romance reveals more about Ava’s upbringing and her obsession with wealth.

Even up until the season finale, Ava continues to be reluctant about dating O’Shon because he doesn’t work a high-paying job.

However, she realizes that her materialistic point of view shouldn’t stop her from following her heart.

During the new season, it would be great to see how O’Shon continues to bring out the best in Ava and show a softer side of her that we viewers don’t usually get to see.

Plus, the date scenes between O’Shon and Ava are absolutely adorable!

2. Jacob Needs A New Love Interest

Let’s all face it, Jacob has been unfairly unlucky with love.

It’s so sad that such a sweet guy like him can’t find anyone when he’s the biggest fan of Janine and Gregory’s relationship and supports everyone around him.

Even worse, Jacob had to confront his ex, Zach, last season, showing that he was still trying to heal after that massive breakup.

Jacob honestly needs a win after everything he’s been through!

Hopefully, he can meet someone new and spark a successful romance on this new season of Abbott Elementary, finally moving on from Zach.

3. Melissa and Barbara: BFFs Until the End

Ahead of the fifth season, creator Quinta Brunson has teased that something major will happen with Barbara’s storyline.

Some fans are worried that means Barbara will retire, but even if she does, we deserve at least to see more of Barbara and Melissa’s friendship.

Their friendship is easily one of the best relationships on the show — so much so that it’s actually hard to imagine what Abbott Elementary would be like without it.

Even though we had plenty of great moments with Barbara and Melissa in earlier seasons, the new season should introduce a few episodes where we get to see them working together, because I could probably watch an entire spinoff just based on them.

4. Go Birds! Another Eagles Cameo?

Abbott Elementary proudly announces itself as a Philadelphia-centric show at every opportunity it gets.

In earlier seasons, the show featured some players from the Eagles, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, for a brief cameo.

In 2025, the Eagles won the Super Bowl, which is great cause for celebration among Philadelphians.

It would make a lot of sense for Abbott Elementary Season 5 to acknowledge the win and maybe bring back some of the Eagles players for an episode.

Seeing how excited both the students and teachers at the school are about the Eagles always makes for a heartwarming episode.

Plus, maybe bringing on the Eagles will give them even better luck this year to get another win!

5. Another Crossover Episode, Please!

One of the most-discussed episodes of the fourth season was the crossover between Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The crossover episode was a perfect blend of references from both shows and appealing to the large audience of fans who tuned in.

While it might not make sense for Abbott Elementary to do yet another crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, there are other shows that they could potentially do a crossover with.

Some people have brought up that The Pitt is another Philadelphia-based show that could work in the same universe as Abbott Elementary.

While that definitely might be more of a stretch, it would be undeniably fun to get a surprise crossover on Abbott Elementary for the upcoming season!

6. New Teachers Welcome!

Abbott Elementary’s current lineup of teachers is absolute perfection.

However, after so many seasons of the show, it would be fun to see some new faces around the school.

Adding new teachers would create opportunities for new friendships to form and fresh challenges for the well-known teachers at Abbott Elementary to tackle.

Additionally, if Barbara were to retire, as mentioned earlier, the school would likely need to hire additional staff.

7. Gregory Meeting Janine’s Family

At this point in the show, Janine and Gregory have been going steady for quite a while.

So, the next step logically would be for Gregory to meet Janine’s family as her boyfriend.

This would not only be an entertaining episode to see how socially awkward Gregory navigates the situation, but also because Janine has a rather eccentric family.

This would also give the show an excuse to bring back some of its best guest stars, including Ayo Edebiri from The Bear, who portrays Janine’s sister.

Knowing Gregory, he would likely stress and fumble when meeting Janine’s family, but ultimately win them over with his charm.

We can imagine how this scenario would go all we’d like, but Abbott Elementary should absolutely cover this scenario!
