Everyone else may be playing checkers, but when it comes to the Game Maker, Morgan and the team are playing chess.
After the shocking ending of High Potential Season 2 Episode 1, we’re reeling from the Game Maker appearing in the bull pen, face-to-face with not just Morgan, but the team.
For a minute, it was starting to seem like he was a figment of her imagination!
Is Maya Price Really Dead?
Throughout the hour, the team scrambled to find Maya and make sense of her abduction, and by the end of the hour, it looked daunting, but we don’t have confirmation of her death yet.
There’s still some hope and possibility that the team may find her or get a lead on her whereabouts. However, the problem lies in playing the game of cat-and-mouse with the Game Maker to achieve that.
We know Derek didn’t abduct her, but he’s been on his way to kill Jason, whom the Game Maker framed for Maya’s abduction.
Both of their fates are up in the air, too. They haven’t caught Derek yet, and Jason could die at his hands.

But I’m wondering if, somehow, the mastermind that he is, the Game Maker doesn’t manage to lead Derek to Maya (dead or alive) in addition to, or in place of, Jason.
He seems intent on screwing with everyone’s heads, and the best way to do that further would be pushing Derek over the edge even more by stumbling across a possible body.
It could also be why the Game Maker opted to show up at the station whenever all this comes to light, so they can’t immediately point the finger at him when all the things he’s orchestrated come to fruition.
The Game Maker’s Obsession with Morgan is Fascinating
Regardless, it’s definitely interesting that the Game Maker has immersed himself in the investigation this early into the game, and he already seems thrilled to keep messing with Morgan.
He could’ve drawn it out more and had the team still second-guessing if she was too emotional or traumatized to be working the case.

Speaking of cases, High Potential Season 2 Episode 2, which is conveniently titled “Checkmate,” has Morgan tying the Game Maker to a series of crimes they haven’t solved yet.
Although I wonder if that will be something she can convince the team of, or if they’ll push back against it as well.
Fortunately, in the promo, it seems like they’re closer to being all-in on trusting that The Game Maker truly is behind a series of abductions. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he’s taunting them like a true pro.
David Giuntoli is just SO GOOD at being a bad guy here, that he’s already making this antagonist too fun to watch.
The Game Maker’s fixation on Morgan is what piques my interest the most. It wasn’t lost on any of us that Maya Price resembled Morgan, and everything he had done thus far had been to get under Morgan’s skin.

His interrogation scenes only have him doubling down on that!
And he’s definitely ready to play, as we see in the promo, that at some point, there will be an explosion.
Where is Roman, and How Will He Elude Daphne and Oz?
But the hour also has Daphne and Oz following up with Roman. The cliffhanger in the premiere had us coming face-to-face with the man, but not Daphne and Oz, and it sounds like he’s on the move again.
It won’t be easy to land him, and that’s a curious thing, as we have to wonder what his story is and why he seemingly fell off the face of the earth for so long!
Hopefully, the next episode will flesh that arc out a bit more, as the Game Maker aspect overshadowed it.
I’m curious as to whether Morgan will have a sit-down with Ava to talk to her about the lead she has on Roman. We have a few images of her for this upcoming episode, and Morgan has taken the approach of being more upfront with her daughter.
Ludo and Elliot Bring the Light Fare

Meanwhile, for the liger fare of the hour, it seems Ludo will be helping Elliot with a school talent show. His father will step in and assist him with putting together a surprise act that they hope will bring the house down.
Given how tense things have been as they try to stay low profile because of the Game Maker, this could be a nice palate cleanser of a storyline for the episode.
Plus, who doesn’t love Ludo?
What are you most looking forward to in Checkmate? Do you have some theories about the Game Maker you’d like to share? Let’s hear them!
We don’t have a PR machine or a million-dollar budget — we have you.
