We’ve been waiting for this guest-star appearance since NBC announced that Eric Dane would appear on Brilliant Minds.
I hope you brought tissues because Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 9 was a tearjerker. A considerable part of it was due to Eric Dane portraying a heroic firefighter with ALS and striving to keep it from his family.
Dane understood this because he was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025, and he also wanted to keep working until the end. You could see so much heart and fight in both Dane and his on-screen character, Matthew Ramati.
Brilliant Minds added another heartbreaking storyline when Sam’s liver failed, and Ericka tracked down his family, prompting an emotional reunion.
“The Firefighter” examined the challenges of fighting diseases independently, the complexities of letting family in, and being thankful for those moments.
Brilliant Minds Went the Extra Mile to Raise Awareness for ALS
Brilliant Minds has often featured unique illnesses and how patients and their families adapt to them.
The series took it to a different level in “The Firefighter,” when Eric Dane starred as heroic firefighter Matthew Ramati, who struggles with his ALS diagnosis and with telling his family.
Dane was recently diagnosed with ALS himself and strived to raise more awareness. There won’t be a dry eye after this episode.
Madchen Amick (Riverdale) portrayed his ex-wife, a fierce and opinionated woman who wanted to help him so their entire family could heal together. Amick and Dane looked and acted like they’d known each other forever with a familiar ease.
However, Matthew prided himself on not burdening his family. He didn’t want his ex-wife, Alicia, to care for him out of pity, not realizing the deep love she still harbored for him.
Brilliant Minds succeeded in showcasing the complexities of having a progressive disease like ALS.
They spent only a limited time on the actual medical aspect, but highlighted the emotional elements of needing coping methods and a support team.
Oliver’s motto about fighting the disease, not the tools, was spot on, but that was challenging for Matthew.
He wanted to keep working to save lives and spare his family, but they wouldn’t believe that he’d disappear and skip Thanksgiving without a reason.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 9 Showcased Choice of Care
Even when Wolf and Carol agreed with Matthew’s family, they still reiterated that choosing treatment was his decision.
I loved that his ex-wife, Alicia, and his daughter, Gabi, loved him enough to adapt their lives and find a solution, but Matthew had always been the strong provider.
It showed progress that Matthew even saw a psychiatrist to discuss his frustration with his ALS because as he lost more function to get around, he lost more of himself.
It was difficult for Alicia to see him that way, and even harder that he never told her and opened up to someone else. All she wanted was to help him get better. Even though they were divorced, she deeply cared for him.
He wouldn’t allow his daughter to quit college, yet I loved how Gabi rushed to research new treatments.
As much as Wolf and Dana understood her frustration, they reminded her that her father needed to agree to those experimental treatments.
Dana was the best choice to relate to Gabi. She’s got the magic touch, and she lost a family member, so her advice about spending time with Matthew on his terms was vital.
Eric Dane’s Role on Brilliant Minds Highlighted the Need for a Village to Survive ALS
Brilliant Minds capitalized on the sentiment that fire station teams act like a family. The fire chief and the rest of the team chipped in to help Matthew, so that’s why he initially moved in there.
Matthew had inspired so many of them, and continued to inspire people in the community, so they wanted to help him.
He thought he could live there until the coffee pot started smoking, and he couldn’t get to it from his wheelchair to stop it. We’ve all had those kitchen accidents, but they are more frightening when you can’t stop them in time because of a disability.
While it scared Matthew enough to realize he needed help breathing and a better living option, he still opted for a facility until Thanksgiving.
It almost felt like an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, but instead of a crew surprising a family with a new house, the entire fire station and community came to support Matthew.
It was such a heartwarming scene that I’m crying again.
He changed so many lives that the entire community will support him, whether by providing meals, arranging doctor appointments, or a friend to visit with.
He had a huge village to count on, beginning with Alicia and Gabi.
Tragically, Not Everyone Gets the Same Type of Care
Sam’s case has touched us this season. He’s connected with Ericka, and even Dr. Thorne had a soft spot for him.
Dr. Thorne has become my favorite new character, as he’s developed a better bedside manner after watching Wolf and Ericka in action.
I appreciated how he offered to buy Sam a hot meal, and when he learned that Sam had gone into liver failure, he notified Ericka immediately, knowing she cared about Sam.
In many ways, Ericka became like family to Sam, and he seemed afraid to let her down and terrified to tell her that her credit card had been stolen.
He tried to follow his regimen, but had no way to get assistance and overdosed on Tylenol, damaging his liver. His yellow eyes and hands meant he was deteriorating quickly.
I hated how cold and clinical Dr. Nichols sounded. I realize that he didn’t know Sam, but it was all about the transplant team not taking risks on people without a support system.
That seemed unfair to let him possibly die after Ericka and Carol convinced Sam he needed help.
It made Ericka determined to find Sam’s family, but she did it without Sam’s permission. That’s technically unethical, and luckily, it worked out as well as it did.
However, the transplant team still thought Sam was a massive risk. Since he’s the season-long patient of Brilliant Minds Season 2, hopefully, his luck will turn around soon.
Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 9 Shows the Importance of Second Chances, Unexpected Reunions, and Family
“The Firefighter” was one of the best episodes of Brilliant Minds Season 2, featuring heartwarming moments.
It reminded us why we fell in love with this series as we watched Wolf and Carol work with Matthew to recognize that his family needed him as much as he needed them.
Sometimes, allowing family or friends to help was a gift in itself. All Alicia ever wanted was for Matthew to open up and tell her that everything wasn’t okay.
He took that step when he attended that family Thanksgiving dinner, and Wolf recognized the importance of second chances and family and returned home to see his mother.
While they didn’t say much, she was the parent who stayed and repeatedly cleaned up the mess, including trying to nurture his ferns.
That meant something, so he tried to silently thank her by carving the turkey.
We didn’t expect Sam to reunite with his family, but our girl, Ericka, never gives up. Her determination had her seeking a reunion and a trasplant for Sam.
They were not like he described them. His parents were so relieved to see him. I teared up as his mom held his hand and his dad assured him they weren’t going anywhere.
My heart broke that the voices from Sam’s schizophrenia had prompted this separation, and I was so relieved that they wanted to help their son.
It Was a Powerful Hour, but Let’s Hear from You!
They wouldn’t lose him again.
I pray they don’t, and Sam gets a liver in time. I wonder if one of his family members will donate a liver if he can’t get one from the registry. It could be a holiday miracle and bring them even closer.
