Two months ago, not many people were aware of Heated Rivalry as a show, and even fewer people probably knew the names Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie.
This queer hockey drama on HBO Max has taken the internet and the world by storm, launching the two stars of the show into fame.
But before Heated Rivalry, both Williams and Storrie had yet to play a main role in a mainstream movie or show.
So, casting these two actors had been a big bet, and it absolutely more than paid off as audiences got to witness their talent.
Therefore, if shows want something to take away from Heated Rivalry‘s success, it should be that bringing on up-and-coming actors is a smart move.
Everyone Deserves A Shot
While the series featured actors who had already appeared in major shows, such as Francois Arnaud and Sophie Nelisse, both of whom were in Yellowjackets, the leading roles went to two initially unknown actors.
Experience often works as an indication of talent, but Williams and Storrie more than proved themselves in the roles of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, respectively.
Their chemistry is what makes the characters’ slow-burn romance so convincing.

The actors truly embody the hockey players they play, bringing these book characters to life in a way that queer audiences have long been waiting for.
Additionally, one of the reasons Heated Rivalry has gone viral is the press interviews Storrie and Williams have done and the unique perspectives they offer as young actors having their big break in the industry.
Both Storrie and Williams have repeatedly credited the show for bringing them together as co-stars and friends.
It’s near-impossible to watch their exchanges without seeing how their natural friendship has contributed to the beloved Shane and Ilya dynamic.

Without Storrie and Williams vocally heralding the show and their dedication to shooting it on such a tight budget and schedule, there wouldn’t have been the same level of hype for the cottage episode.
Now that they’ve had a chance to display their acting skills, these two actors are sure to book more roles ahead of the wait for Heated Rivalry Season 2.
Hollywood Needs Fresh Talent!
I’ll admit that I have been guilty of watching something just because I liked an actor who was in it (yes, I sat through all of I Love LA for Josh Hutcherson).
However, I also agree with the sentiment that sometimes Hollywood relies too heavily on casting from the same actor pool.
While it can be nice to see a familiar face nail a new role, it’s even more rewarding to watch a new face take on an ambitious role.

Heated Rivalry’s choice to cast Williams and Storrie was so great because it didn’t have to bank on the actors’ existing success.
Instead, it gave these up-and-coming actors a spotlight and the trust that they needed to help the show succeed.
Many people forget that casting actors early in their careers can absolutely pay off.
Heated Rivalry serves as a reminder that audiences are eager to see fresh faces on the screen, and other shows should follow their example.
After all, there are definitely lots of talented actors out there who are still waiting to get their big break.

It’s about time that television shows give them the platform they have been waiting for.
