Euphoria Season 3 Has Lost The Original Vision Of The Show

After four years, Euphoria is finally returning this April with a new season.

HBO recently released the trailer for the upcoming season, offering a first look at some of the beloved characters.

Unfortunately, it proves our greatest fear: Euphoria has officially lost the plot.

We’ve previously discussed what we’re hoping the show might cover in the upcoming episodes.

And the trailer hasn’t really answered any of the burning questions – instead, it offers a completely new plot simply tied to familiar characters.

Rue’s Storyline

The star of this series has always been Zendaya and her character, Rue.

Euphoria Season 1 offered an honest and empathetic view of Rue’s journey with drug addiction and recovery.

However, it seems like instead of focusing on Rue getting her life together, the trailer for Euphoria Season 3 promises a new life for her getting involved with drug dealers.

This new arc for Rue threatens to undo all the goodwill built from previous seasons with her addiction.

The show frames her involvement with drug dealers in an action-oriented light rather than attempting to have an honest and empathetic approach to recovery.

Of course, it might be too early to judge, but from the framing of the trailer, Rue’s future isn’t looking too bright.

The one positive that the trailer offers for Rue is a possible reunion with Jules.

These two girls had a complex, nuanced relationship that was fascinating to explore, so here’s hoping the new season does them justice.

Cassie and Nate’s Unhappy Marriage

The one couple who seemed to have continued their romance after Euphoria Season 2 appears to be Nate and Cassie.

While they may be getting married, the couple seems to be far from happy.

From the way Nate is displeased with Cassie’s career as a camgirl, it seems like their relationship is going to be strained by their different visions for the future.

Additionally, we got some sneak shots of the wedding itself, which looks extravagant and expensive.

Euphoria has always been flexible with bending viewer perceptions, but the wedding certainly raises the question of how exactly Nate and Cassie found the money to put it together.

This connects to the larger issue the trailer presents: the basic premise of Euphoria no longer exists.

These characters have obviously moved past high school, so the story seems to have to bend over backwards to connect their plotlines together.

What made the show so enticing at first was how the main characters’ stories were interlinked.

But by separating everyone and showing them on different paths, Euphoria Season 3 is shaping up to be a tangled web of stories rather than a cohesive one.

The trailer was relatively vague about what Maddy and Jules are up to now, though it’s implied that Jules might be a sex worker.

So, we still have to wait and see where the show is taking the characters and why we should stay invested in their stories.

Plus, we’re still holding out hope that the show can give a meaningful tribute to Angus Cloud, one of the actors who passed away before Season 3.
