Did you hear there’s a new Superman movie coming out in July? There is! Some people seem to be pretty excited about it. DC is doing a whole Summer of Superman initiative to promote and capitalize on that excitement. Today the publisher revealed a tie-in to the upcoming James Gunn-directed feature with a series of Superman movie-themed variant covers due on eight of their titles, beginning next month.
Covers, issues receiving the variants, and artists contributing as follows:
- Supergirl #1 cover by Nicola Scott & Annette Kwok, out on May 14th
- Superman Unlimited #1 cover by Jim Lee (and presumably the finished piece will be inked by Scott Williams and colored by Alex Sinclair), out on May 21st
- Action Comics #1087 cover by Dan Jurgens, Norm Rapmund, and Alex Sinclair, out on June 11th
- Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 cover by Dan Mora, out on June 18th
- Superman #27 cover by Jerry Ordway, which also features Rachel Brosnahan‘s Lois Lane, out on June 25th
- Batman #161 cover by Jorge Jiménez, out on June 25th
- Justice League Unlimited #9 cover by Frank Quitely, out on July 23rd
The eighth title, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #41, will sport a yet-to-be-revealed variant cover by Kevin Maguire. That book is due out on July 16th. Wild guess that it’s a Guy Gardner-centric cover.
The Superman themed variants are the latest revealed by DC to feature the David Corenswet‘s movie version of the Man of Steel. Previously-shown variants, both drawn by Dan Mora, include an Action Comics #1 Facsimile Edition variant for tomorrow’s Superman Day, and a variant for May’s Superman Unlimited #1 featuring Corenswet’s Superman and director Gunn.
We’re inching closer and closer to what I’m really hoping DC puts out: a comics adaptation of the movie. Bring back comics adaptations! Superman Returns got one in 2006, and since then, nothing. Returns also got a quartet of prequel comics, and DC and Gunn aren’t above doing tie-in comics for shows like Peacemaker, so hope springs eternal.
Look for all of these variant covers to arrive in stores over the next few months.
