Spain was hit by a huge power cut on Monday that affected most of the country, halting trains, disrupting flights and making traffic lights go dark. There was no immediate explanation for the outage.

The Spanish electricity transmission operator said it had activated plans to restore supply in co-operation with businesses in the sector. In a message on X it said it was still looking at the causes of the incident.

It subsequently said that it had began to recover voltage in the north and south of the peninsula, which it said was key to gradually recovering energy supply.

Data from the transmission operator showed that more than 10GW of demand was cut off when the blackout hit, suggesting that it was one of the biggest in recent European history.

The outage affected millions of people across Spain in cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, while Portuguese residents also reported that their power had been cut.
