Jensen Ackles’ Terrible Prime Video Thriller Countdown Gets Cancelled

Prime Video has reset the clock on Countdown. The series has been cancelled after one season alongside Daniel Dae Kim-led Butterfly.

This development might be received differently based on how you felt about the show.

For those of us who felt disappointed by the crime thriller from Derek Haas, this is vindicating because it seemed like the show’s popularity stemmed more from Jensen Ackles’ star power than its actual quality.

Countdown managed a mere 35% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, while viewers gave it a 63%.

However, the show remained a consistent performer on streaming, appearing on Prime Video’s Top 10 chart since it premiered in June. The streamer has not revealed the viewership numbers.

Countdown is currently at number 10 in the US but has disappeared from the global viewership chart.

What Went Wrong With Countdown?

Many of us were excited for the show, given that it was summer and there were no procedurals on the air. The drama also boasted a stellar cast, who we expected to showcase their prowess.

However, Countdown turned out to be less than basic, recycling characters and storylines that have been done on other shows, and to a greater degree.

Week after week, the show’s quality declined progressively, and by Episode 10, it was almost unwatchable.

The nail in the coffin was “The Muzzle Pile,”  an episode that ended what should have been the first season in an underwhelming fashion and moved on to “Season 2.”

Consequently, the Countdown Season 1 Episode 13 never felt like a proper season finale, and the show fizzled out.

Check out this article where we dissect everything that went wrong with the show in an attempt to make sense of it all.

Jensen Ackles’ Fans, Don’t Worry

A show’s cancellation is saddening for everyone who has poured their heart and soul into it. However, all things must end, and if there is an upside, the cast is free to pursue better projects that’ll allow them to showcase their talents.

Apart from a recurring arc on Tracker, Ackles returns to Prime Video soon with Vought Rising, a spinoff of The Boys.

Ackles reprises his popular character Soldier Boy in the prequel series that explores the early days of Vought.

“It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought.

“We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V,” executive producer Eric Kripke and series showrunner and executive producer Paul Grellong said in a statement.

Vought Rising also stars Aya Cash, Elizabeth Posey, Mason Dye, William Hochman, Jordan Myrie, Brian J. Smith, and Ricky Staffieri.
