The Golden Globes recently announced their nominations for television shows, and the competition gap between drama and comedy series is looking dismal.
Taking place on January 11, 2026, the 83rd Golden Globes will air on CBS and honor television shows from 2025.
Given that the nomination qualification window is different from the Emmys, the shows covered by this awards show are slightly different.
But the selection of series in each category certainly says a lot about how each genre has been faring lately.
In particular, the Golden Globes suggest that drama shows appear stronger than ever, while comedy shows seem to be on the decline.
Bring On the Drama!
The competition among the drama nominees is something worth watching closely.
Among the nominees are drama shows that have run for multiple seasons and garnered critical acclaim over the years, such as The White Lotus, Slow Horses, and The Diplomat.

These shows have already proven their worth, especially with The White Lotus getting over 20 Emmy nominations this past year, and therefore prove that the existing world of drama shows is strong.
These nominations demonstrate that long-running shows have maintained their high quality.
In addition, there is a large selection of newer drama contenders entering the category, including Severance, Pluribus, and The Pitt.
Each of these shows has been a breakout over the past year, gaining recognition not only from critics but also from TV fans.
The fact that both newer and older drama series are strong contenders in the category bodes well for the drama genre.

Additionally, the leading Best Drama Series nominations don’t even cover the entire scope of fantastic dramas that aired last year.
Shows like Andor, Task, and The Last of Us scooped up nominations in actor categories.
The drama category appears to be thriving, primarily because wins across nominations will likely be split among multiple shows, a sign of worthy competition.
Unfortunately, it would be hard to say the same for the comedy category.
What Is There to Laugh At?
Let’s face it: after it swept at the Emmys, The Studio is set up to take home most of the Golden Globe nominations for comedy.

The rest of the competition consists almost entirely of shows that have run for multiple seasons, such as Hacks, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, and Only Murders in the Building.
While these shows have already received their flowers and recognition, several of them have seen a noticeable decline in quality over the years.
Arguments about whether The Bear qualifies as a comedy or a drama have certainly died down after Season 4, which let many fans down and proved that the show is past its prime.
Fans have been very ambivalent about the latest season of Abbott Elementary, too.
But if The Studio is our only hope across the comedy category, things are looking pretty bleak for the state of comedy.

Additionally, there’s a large sitcom-shaped hole in the comedy nominations, as Abbott Elementary is the only broadcast sitcom to be nominated.
Hacks is a worthy contender, but there seems to be a lot more buzz around The Studio, which just goes to show how limited the comedy category has been in recent years.
There haven’t been many new shows in recent years, and long-running shows are losing steam, suggesting that comedy needs a renaissance sooner rather than later.
But until then, the Golden Globes serve as a great reminder that there are plenty of top-tier drama shows to tune in to.
