Back in Feburary during ComicsPro, DC Comics announced details for a Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton miniseries from writer Ryan North and artist Mike Norton with colors by Ian Herring. Given how the Super Pet’s newfound popularity in the wake of the first Superman teaser trailer back in December, this miniseries announcement didn’t come as a complete surprise.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Krypto is playing a pivotal role for Warner Bros. and DC Studios in the promotion for the upcoming Superman film. In fact, DC unveiled earlier this week its “Krypto’s Golden Biscuit” contest allowing two fans who find “Krypto’s Golden Biscuit” hidden in polybagged copies of next month’s facsimile edition of Adventure Comics #210 to win access to the Superman world premiere.

Much like the Man of Steel of himself, Krypto’s origin has constantly changed over the years given the various retcons to DC continuity. With this Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton miniseries five-issue miniseries, DC promises to provide the definitive origin for the beloved canine.

There will come a day when Krypto stands beside Superman, helping him fight off monsters, aliens, and supervillains—a day when this dog will save his adoptive world thanks to the incredible powers granted him by Earth’s strange yellow sun. But he’s not there yet.

Today, Krypto is a normal puppy on Krypton, spending each happy, snoozy, endless day alongside his family: Jor-El, Lara, and baby Kal-El. But when a rocket test goes wrong, Krypto finds himself lost in space—and soon crash-landing, all alone, on a strange and alien world called Earth.

Writer Ryan North shared the following:

“Krypto’s origin has always been done at kind of a high level. The little guy starts out on Krypton, ends up on Earth, and helps Superman fight crime. The chance to really define Krypto—to show what a little lost dog would go through if he landed all alone on a strange alien world named Earth—was really enticing. And I also fell in love with the idea of treating Krypto as the actual dog he is: he doesn’t talk, and we don’t cheat by reading his thoughts in balloons either. Mike Norton’s art captures exactly what needs to be ‘said’ in every scene.”

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1 will be available on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025. The first issue will have a main cover by Jae Lee, a variant cover by Dustin Nguyen, a Superman Movie variant cover by Dan Mora, and a blank sketch variant.
