I’ve come to a slightly unsettling realization lately: I may be one of the last people alive who plans their TV watching.
Seriously — when I see a trailer or read about a show or movie that looks promising, I jot it down.
If it doesn’t show up on my streamer of choice right away, I go find it.
I’ll track down the network, check air dates, stalk the actors’ IMDb pages, maybe even see what else the showrunner has done. I like to know what I’m getting into, and I like to know why.
But here’s what gets me: the average viewer doesn’t seem to be doing that at all.
More and more, I’m convinced we’re just watching whatever a streamer drops in our laps.
Turn on Netflix, and oh look, a big shiny banner! Must be important. Click. Watch. Move on.
It’s not just Netflix, either.

Every platform has its own version of “The Almighty Front Page,” and if your show doesn’t make it there, well… good luck.
Meanwhile, shows with zero buzz suddenly spike in viewership because they got slapped across the top of the homepage like a giant digital billboard screaming, “Watch me!”
I get it. It’s easy. You’re tired. You don’t want to scroll endlessly.
But are we really choosing what to watch anymore, or are we letting the algorithm do it for us?
I’m genuinely curious — am I the weirdo here?

Do you bookmark stuff ahead of time?
Do you watch something because you liked the actor in another project?
Or do you hit “play” on whatever shiny new thing is being shouted at you by your TV?
It feels like a small thing, but it says something about how we’re consuming entertainment.
Are we explorers… or are we just passengers?
Take the poll below and let me know: How do you find your next favorite show or movie? Pick any three answers that apply to you, and then go deep in the comments.
