A new season of The Gilded Age is finally upon us after a long wait, and in case you need a recap, there were a lot of dangling storylines that will need to be resolved when the series returns.

While Bertha will still be on the warpath and hunting for a suitor for Gladys, Ada and Agnes will be adjusting to the shift in power dynamics within their household.

And Marian, who has been unlucky in love to this point, will be dealing with the aftermath of an unexpectedly sweet kiss with friend Larry.

Marian’s love journey has had its ups and downs; with their first love, Tom Raikes, she fell for the lawyer who came on a little strong but did seem to be charmed by Marian.

The Gilded Age Has a Charming Romance

He was also charmed by New York’s high society, and in the end, their relationship fizzled out, leaving Marian once again single in the big city at the start of The Gilded Age Season 2.

Her bachelorette status saw distant, maybe cousin Dashiell Montgomery, courting Marian, and their relationship blossomed throughout the season, as Marian took on the mantle of mother and wife in a sort of ready-made family.

While Marian seemed to harbor real feelings for Tom, which developed over time, the same couldn’t be said for her and Dashiell.

Have you ever seen anyone less excited to get engaged?

Ultimately, Marian’s heart wasn’t entirely in the relationship with Dashiell, and even though she adored his daughter, Frances, it wasn’t enough to pledge herself to him for life.

Ending that engagement freed Marian up, and even though she wasn’t looking for another romantic relationship right away, one fell into her lap in the form of her neighbor and close friend, Larry Russell.

Larry has also had his fair share of dalliances, most recently with the older Susan Blane, a widowed socialite with whom Larry engaged in a rather exhilarating and passionate affair whilst Larry was in Newport helping to renovate her house.

The affair was short-lived, as Bertha wasn’t at all interested in having that relationship reflect on Larry or her family.

Larry Had a Tough Previous Relationship

After a brief period of mourning, Larry had moved on from Mrs. Blane and showed some subtle interest in Marian.

Many fans have clamored for a Marian and Larry romance since the two met, though their interactions have been more friendly than openly flirty.

One of the best things about the pair is that it has always seemed like Marian was herself around Larry, and she opened up to him in many ways, and he did the same with her.

There’s a comfort between them, and while it hasn’t always been clear that the show was angling for this union, as the two would often go long stretches without many meaningful interactions, that doesn’t mean the fans have forgotten.

And the kiss they shared during The Gilded Age Season 2 Episode 8 felt like the beginning of something.

The kiss took Marian aback, but for only a moment.

You could tell that the kiss was meaningful for her, and perhaps for one of the first times, she felt at ease with someone she already had such a solid foundation with, alongside feeling that spark.

With Tom Raikes, there was a romantic spark, but other factors led to their demise.

Is This New Relationship Worthwhile?

With Cousin Dashiell, everything around them seemed to work, but their relationship felt forced and lacked genuine passion.

With Larry, there’s serious potential for those fireworks —bottom of the ninth, World Series home run— kind of feelings. But is that the way the story will go?

And let’s be serious: once Bertha finds out, all bets are off.

(Karolina Wojtasik/HBO)

The Gilded Age Season 3 could set us up for an epic romance, or maybe we’re getting our hopes up, and this relationship will continue Marian’s string of being unlucky in love.

But more importantly, how do you guys feel about Marian and Larry?

Are you rooting for these two kids to make it?

Or do you think they’re better off as friends?
