Baez’s Return On Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 6 Soothed Some Fears But Wasn’t Enough

Come back soon, Baez!

Her visit on Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 6 was the longest she’s spent with Danny since he moved, and it demonstrated why these two were always perfect as partners — romantic and otherwise.

Baez and Danny still bounce off each other perfectly when solving a case, and their romantic chemistry is still strong, but Baez had to rush off, and God only knows when we’ll see her again. Bah!

I Wasn’t Expecting Baez To Consult on Danny’s Case

When I learned Baez and Danny were working together, I thought they would have a case where the perp started in New York and continued his crime spree in Boston.

That was probably naive, since half the reason Blue Bloods was canceled in the first place was that New York had become prohibitively expensive to film in.

Plus, that kind of crossover would make more sense if both shows were on the air so that the story could start on one and end on the other.

Still, that would have been fun, especially if Danny had to interact with Baez’s partner in addition to her interacting with Lena.

Don’t get me wrong — I enjoyed Baez’s stint as a guest expert who was helping Lena and Danny out (and busting Danny’s chops by giving his lunch to Lena).

And she and Danny had the same partner chemistry they always did on Blue Bloods, so Baez’s appearance felt like old times.

Still, if this were an alternate universe where Blue Bloods was still on or the rest of the cast was available and willing to come back for an episode (and CBS could somehow afford it), it would have been so nice to have a full crossover.

Since that’s not possible, let’s hope that Baez moves to Boston permanently.

These cameo appearances and visits where she and Danny barely see each other simply aren’t enough, and don’t make sense for the characters’ relationship.

I Hate The Trope of the 24/7 Cop

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 6 is far from the only show to utilize that annoying plot device where cops are on call permanently and can never take any personal time — Law & Order: SVU‘s Olivia Benson once arrived at a crime scene in a fancy dress and high heels.

Still, it always feels unrealistic, and this was no exception.

Yes, Danny has always been somewhat of a workaholic, and he and Linda couldn’t get a weekend away either without work interfering.

But some of the interruptions this time seemed unnecessary and plot-driven rather than unavoidable.

Lena pushed Danny to go to lunch with Baez, so why did the two of them return early?

I know with a case in progress, every minute counts, but this felt unnecessary.

Lena texted about the security footage, so couldn’t Danny have texted her back about their theory or said “give me 30 minutes to eat?”

Did Danny’s inability to have any time off make sense to you?

All of this, of course, was a pretext for Baez to wonder aloud where the relationship was going. By the time Danny finally found a few minutes, she was also suffering from 24/7 syndrome and had to go back to New York to deal with a case.

Thank goodness this didn’t end with them breaking up… at least not yet.

Look, I didn’t ship Danny and Baez after Linda’s death on Blue Bloods Season 8 just so they could break up when Danny moved to Beantown!

Speaking of Romance, What The Heck Was That Sean Subplot?

Sorry, but I wasn’t a fan of this “meet-cute” when Sean tackled a woman who didn’t hear his orders to stop because of her noise-canceling headphones.

I’m an advocate for criminal justice reform, so I liked Penny’s feeling that every system was conspiring against her to keep her from getting a second chance, but I could have done without the rest of this.

Record or no record, the idea of dating someone that Sean met by almost arresting her feels weird to me, and I’m almost certain there’s a regulation against it.

I wasn’t a fan of Jonah telling Sean to just do whatever he wanted to do, because Sean’s attraction to a woman that Danny might not like wasn’t the only consideration — his career was.

Plus, it led to the cringiest dinner scene in Boston Blue’s short history.

I love that Boston Blue has kept up the tradition of a weekly family dinner, but those impressions of Danny were terrible.

The best I can say about it is that, for some reason, Sarah sounded like Linda.

Let’s hope Boston Blue never does that again, no matter what happens with Sean’s love life.

Mae’s Story Made Up For That Nonsense

Mae’s insistence that doing what’s right is more important than doing what you have the right to do was giving me Frank Reagan vibes.

That’s one thing that’s been missing. Blue Bloods always had Frank tangled up in a political story where he was more interested in doing the right thing than looking good, and Boston Blue hasn’t had anything like that.

That cliffhanger, though…

Ben’s killer getting a second chance at an acquittal is going to throw everyone for a loop, and the midseason finale is coming in just a few weeks, so this story will probably move toward an even more exciting cliffhanger.

I’m glad Mae didn’t compromise her morals for Yancy, either. Lena had to learn the hard way not to take his sister’s word for it that Yancy was innocent.
