Cold case time!
Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 5 spoilers promise that the bloody mess they find at a crime scene will lead them to one of Boston’s most infamous unsolved murders.
This should be fun, especially since a parallel story is about police shootings in the present.
Could Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 5 Be Based On A Real Case?
Since the show is supposed to be set in Boston and is partially filmed there, it would be a shame if it didn’t use real Boston history.
Boston is the home to several infamous murderers — there are lingering questions about whether Albert DeSalvo worked alone as the Boston Strangler, for example — but none of them fit the profile of this shooting.
Blue Bloods didn’t really do ripped-from-the-headlines stories the way Dick Wolf shows tend to, but even so, some stories had things in common with current events. (Does anyone think Danny finding all those bodies on the beach wasn’t a reference to the Gilgo Beach Killer?)
Boston Blue can and should do something similar with this story.
Boston has such a rich history already that it doesn’t need a completely made-up cold case.
There is plenty of source material to draw from.
Danny’s Reaction Should Be Interesting
Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 5 can play up the fish-out-of-water aspects of the premise with this case.
Danny is not a Boston native, so he didn’t grow up with the rumors, innuendos, and fear surrounding this cold case.

That could give him a unique perspective that allows him and Lena to solve it for once and all, but it also could cause him to accidentally step on toes and make the people he needs to talk to shut down.
Danny experienced this to an extent in New York, also — there were a few Blue Bloods episodes where people who lived in Little Vietnam wouldn’t talk to him because they didn’t trust a white cop to protect them.
However, this should be even more pronounced in Boston.
Danny was a son of the city in Brooklyn, and he had his entire cop family to turn to for advice about how to handle it if a witness didn’t want to talk to him because he wasn’t part of the community.
In Boston, he’s even more of an outsider, and he will have to follow the Silvers’ lead so that he doesn’t alienate anyone.
The version of Danny who has appeared on Boston Blue seems more willing to follow others’ advice than the one we left behind in New York, who Frank worried was too hotheaded to advance in his career.
Still, he’s never going to leave his New York ways completely behind, and sometimes they do things differently in Boston, so there could be some drama there.
Boston Blue Will Also Take On Police Shootings From A Different Perspective
Blue Bloods worked hard to share the point of view that cops have to make split-second decisions and that most police shootings are not malicious.
That’s a valuable perspective, but the Silvers are likely to have a different one because they are a Black and Jewish family.
That’s one of the things that excites me about Boston Blue.
I try not to compare the two shows — Blue Bloods was one of my favorite shows, and I’ve had the finale saved on my DVR for almost a year.

But it did also come from the perspective of a white, Irish-Catholic cop family, and though the writers didn’t force any point of view on the audience, it resonated with people who felt the cops get a bad rap and are often unfairly accused of bias.
And that’s fine — but I’m looking forward to seeing a different perspective, not necessarily to agree with it but to hear it.
This type of story will make it clear whether Boston Blue is continuing Blue Bloods’ mission to portray police in a positive yet fair light, which was one of the reasons it appealed to a cross-section of the audience.
I know there are some fans who are angry that Boston Blue hasn’t made that explicit the way Blue Bloods did.
In my opinion, there’s room for both perspectives on TV, and I think one of the tragedies of Blue Bloods’ cancelation is that we only get one of those perspectives now.
I don’t have any way to prove this, but I think some of the criticisms of Boston Blue are coming from Blue Bloods not being on too, and if it had been introduced before Blue Bloods ended, viewers might feel differently.
Anyway, I’m curious to see how this issue plays out for the Silvers, especially since Sean and Jonah come from different backgrounds and likely have different perspectives on this.
I also expect this story to involve Sarah.
I’m somewhat confused by how often she’s out in the field. I thought her role as supervisor was similar to Frank’s as commissioner in New York.
