A car crashed into the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn on Wednesday evening, and the New York Police Department is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, officials said.

The incident was caught on video.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said police were already assigned to a detail at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood when they heard a commotion in the building’s main entrance around 8:45 p.m.

When they responded, they saw a car strike the rear door, reverse and then strike the door again.

No injuries were reported, and the driver was taken into custody, Tisch said.

The NYPD Bomb Squad responded and conducted a full sweep of the car. No explosives or other dangerous devices were found, she said.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation.

At a news conference, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it a “horrifying incident” and “deeply alarming” and said “antisemitism has no place in our society.”

The incident occurred during a Chabad holiday, when thousands of people from around the world were gathered at the headquarters, New York Attorney General Letitia James told reporters.

The Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey released a statement on social media.

“We are deeply disturbed by reports of an incident that occurred tonight in Brooklyn. Just minutes ago, a car repeatedly rammed into 770 Eastern Parkway,” the organization said in the statement. “This building is not only a synagogue, but also the worldwide @ChabadHeadquarters and a beloved symbol of Judaism around the world.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
