Office life isn’t suited for everyone. Some entrepreneurs prefer a more natural environment as their workplace. And as founders look for the best startup idea to tackle, there are several that lend themselves to fresh air and sunshine.
Working outside might offer the chance for better physical health and lower stress levels, but there are some things to consider. For instance, for every gorgeous spring or fall day, there is a brutal summer heatwave, frigid winter day, or storm in any season. And, in some cases, you’ll have to launch a company with dual focuses to avoid strictly being a seasonal business. That pales, though, compared to being outside on a beautiful afternoon while desk-bound workers stare at you with envy.

Lawn care and landscaping
Lawn care is an obvious choice for people who prefer to work outdoors. Whether you and your team are mowing and weeding, raking fall leaves or cleaning out the gutters, there’s an incredible amount of demand that will let you enjoy fresh air as you work. And that work can come from both commercial and residential customers, both of whom are often recurring, generating a reliable stream of income.
There are some challenges with this particular startup idea, though. The ongoing increase in gas prices can impact profitability, but you can temper that impact by centering your business around electric- or battery-powered equipment. That move also eliminates the noise (and environmental) pollution of traditional lawn care tools, which could attract more customers.
On the landscaping front, there’s growing demand for drought-resistant plants in areas that have water conservation restrictions. The sustainable landscaping field is expected to grow to a $13.5 billion market by 2030.
The more outdoor focused your company is, though, the better, says Simon Worsfold, head of data communications at Intuit QuickBooks, which puts out a monthly Small Business Index exploring market trends. Any industry rooted in physical work, he says, offers “a rare combination of economic stability, sustained demand, and the ability to adopt AI on your own terms.”
