Nonfiction is showing up strong on the bestseller lists this week. Starting with a feel-good read, there’s I’ll Believe in Anything by Jacob Tierney, which is a collection of annotated scripts for the first season of Heated Rivalry. The rest of the new nonfiction books on the lists are of a very different tone. In the Shadow of Eight by Collin Gosselin is a memoir from one of the sextuplets from Jon & Kate Plus 8, sharing the traumatic details of his childhood that didn’t make it onto the screen. The American Way of Killing by Malcolm Gladwell, investigating the history of gun violence in the U.S., has also climbed up the ranks recently.
This list continues to lack diversity on many levels, including being disproportionately by white authors. Some Indie Bestsellers you should know about are American Hagwon by Min Jin Lee, The Disappearers by Marlon James, Off the Reservation by Stephen Graham Jones, and Happy Snacking, Don’t Die!: Foraging and Vegan Recipes with Black Forager (A Cookbook) by Alexis Nikole Nelson.
To get these numbers, we look at The New York Times, both Combined Print & E-Book Fiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction lists; Amazon Charts, both Fiction and Nonfiction; Publishers Weekly; USA Today; and Indie Bestsellers, Fiction and Nonfiction, both Paperback and Hardcover.
