As usual with bestseller lists, the weeks close to each other resemble each other, though there are some key differences. For one, Caro Claire Burke’s tradwife thriller Yesteryear is the only book holding on to the coveted status of appearing on all five lists this week. The other books that were on all five lists with it have simply dropped down to being on four. I am happy to report that the new addition to the bestseller lists this week is also a part of one of my favorite sci-fi series ever.
Platform Decay by Martha Wells is the eighth book in the Murderbot Diaries, a series of mostly novellas that follows a security unit that grants itself free will and dubs itself “Murderbot,” but really only wants to watch reruns of space soap opera Sanctuary Moon. If you really want to treat yourself, I highly recommend that you listen to the audiobook narrated by Kevin R. Free.
As glad as I am to see Platform Decay, it unfortunately doesn’t add to this week’s diversity, which continues to lack on many levels, including being disproportionately by white authors. It’s worth revisiting the Independent Press Top 40 Bestsellers mentioned last week, which shows the bestselling independently published books, especially since there is a little more diversity. Some highlights from the list include the super popular manga Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, Kindred by Octavia Butler, Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer, and The Wretched of the Earth by Franz Fanon.
To get these numbers, we look at the New York Times, both Combined Print & E-Book Fiction and Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction lists; Amazon Charts, both Fiction and Nonfiction; Publishers Weekly; USA Today; and Indie Bestsellers, Fiction and Nonfiction, both Paperback and Hardcover.
