That was epic!

For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 9, “Sons and Daughters,” is what this show has been building towards.

The journey has been rough, but these 40 minutes make it worth sitting through the boring parts.

This episode improves on For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 8, which was also great in its own right, but this hour cuts the fluff and gets to the meat.

The cold open sets the atmosphere, as the war teased since the season premiere finally materializes.

Seeing the Marines arrive with their shuttles makes it seem like an alien invasion landing on Earth.

Chilling to the bone.

But that would be an even better development because we know it’s soldiers coming to get the job done after the Goldilocks fiasco that ended in Ruiz’s death.

The stage was set a long time ago as the Marsies have been preparing for this inevitable show of force.

The dial has been turning slowly, increasing pressure, and everything is ready to explode.

Jarrett can’t wait to land in Happy Valley and avenge Ruiz.

The Complex Nature of War

What makes this war particularly hard to watch is that it is based entirely on misunderstanding and propaganda.

As with many wars, things are never black and white, and the origins date back decades.

Yet things slowly simmer, and then a turning point, and there is no way back.

On the one hand, I can see what Marsies were trying to do — slow down the Marines until a solution can be reached without casualties.

But the Marines have been taught to see these people as a threat, so when they blow up the platform and Ruiz dies, it’s not only a duty but also a personal responsibility.

In Swahili, there is a proverb, “hasira hasara,” that cautions people against acting in anger.

It roughly translates to “anger leads to losses,” but it doesn’t pack the same punch without the onomatopoeic structure.

This war is a classic case of hasira hasara because all those people did not need to die.

And the worst part is that now every side has dug itself deeper into its beliefs.

However, there is a glimmer of hope in the younger generation when Baldwin shoots his friend Haskell, but instead of letting him die to cover his mistake up, he seeks help.

Perhaps things will be fine after all.

But as Happy Valley descends into chaos, murder, war crimes, and destruction, something else unfolds on Titan.

Sojourner’s Mission Takes a Turn

Now the search for life is something that I’ve invested in throughout this season, even though we haven’t seen much of it.

The last three episodes have been a turning point as the show finally remembered what makes it different and reclaims those stakes by putting Sojourner at the forefront.

This hour brings bad news for Kelly & Co when their seeker finds no signs of life on Titan.

Leave the crew alone; this would be devastating to viewers who want to know how For All Mankind would handle life on another planet.

Still, they throw us a bone when the team finds a glowing substance.

Now, if there was life on another planet, I doubt it’d be something like wide-eyed humanoids or slithering worms.

Even the proteins the scientists are searching for might never be present.

But what if it was a different kind?

The direction they seem to be going in reminded me of the stellar Netflix sci-fi series Another Life, which has explored a different potential configuration of sentient life.

Kelly and the team could discover a different kind of life that would change how we think about this question.

Instead of unearthing new questions about the life on Titan, what if they found answers?

What if they found a complete ecosystem capable of explaining itself?

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

When Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi told Collider that the finale would shock people, I didn’t believe them because we were deep in the trenches of the boring political arcs.

But now, I’m ready for that silent scream.

Gut Check

“Sons and Daughters” is downright the best episode I’ve seen of any show this year. The tension is created from the first second, and it doesn’t let up.

Even the parts that never worked before serve a purpose here. That or everything is so good they don’t matter.

(Apple TV/Screenshot)

Finally, the episode is structured to escalate rather than meander. Using Sojouner as the launch pad to Mars is basically what the season should have done all along.

The way the Marine invasion unfolds feels grand and well-structured rather than chaotic.

This hour is engaging, twisty, and bold.

Intrusive Thoughts

  • That opening scene should be in a museum.

  • Alex did not seem to be hogging screen time here. Good job!

Over to you, For All Mankind Fanatics. What did you think of the episode? Is it the best hour or what?

Let’s keep the conversation going — it’s the only way the good stuff survives.
