Ebon Moss-Bachrach rose to fame for his portrayal of Richie Jerimovich in “The Bear,” winning two Primetime Emmy awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The role has also earned him two Golden Globe nominations.

Moss-Bachrach’s prominent TV credits include “Girls,” “NOS4A2,” “The Punisher,” “The Last Ship,” and “Andor.” The actor has also appeared in movies like “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” where he plays Ben Grimm/The Thing, a role he is set to reprise in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Moss-Bachrach has also starred in “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Higher Ground,” and “No Hard Feelings.”

Moss-Bachrach has emerged as a singular presence onscreen due to the authenticity he brings to his characters, which is why he is today’s quote of the day.

“You have to be a perennial! It’s very important when you work as an actor, or in any kind of collaborative media, to be able to fool yourself and trick yourself into thinking that the thing you’re working on has some value or some potential. Even if it doesn’t! … One of the hardest challenges for me is when the material or the writing is not so good, or maybe when my motives are not so pure, I have to figure out ways in, ways to find inspiration.”

The above quote is from Moss-Bachrach’s 2024 interview with The Talks. The actor spoke about striking a balance between having a pure love for art and the need to take on jobs for economic reasons, while emphasizing the need to find value in whatever creative endeavor one chooses to pursue.

“You need to be able to fool yourself for that amount of time that you’re working on it, to be able to show up and honor it and do service to your own work,” the actor said. Although some jobs might not spark unfiltered creative joy, it is necessary to find inspiration to commit to them nonetheless.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach prefaces his above quote by clarifying that while he doesn’t feel “cynical” about his work as an actor, some of his “idealism” has naturally faded with age. An actor might not always connect with a creative project, but it is necessary to honor it for the sake of consistency. 

“I try not to judge the material too harshly,” he added.

Although Moss-Bachrach is cognizant of the financial realities of pursuing any profession, he insists that his love for art isn’t defined by the need to earn wealth. 

“I mean, listen, if I was interested in making a lot of money, I never would have become an actor!” he said. 

He continued: “What I’ve always been attracted to most is the variety of experiences that you can have between the three medium — film, television, and theater — but also with different kinds of writing and different kinds of parts.”
