“Daredevil: Born Again” will end with Season 3 in 2027, but it’s impressive that the show managed to get off the ground in the first place when Marvel overhauled the series midway through production back in 2023. According to Charlie Cox, who plays Matt Murdock, the show’s original approach didn’t work because the creative team “didn’t want to alienate an audience that hadn’t watched the [Netflix] show.”
Instead, they treated the Marvel Netflix characters like alternate versions of the ones audiences had been watching since 2015. “So there was a conversation about it being almost like a variant. You know, in the ‘Loki’ show, we talk about these variants. It was almost like it was a variant,” he told Deadline’s Crew Call podcast. “So it was another version of these characters existing in a world.”
Cox called it “a fun idea,” but it had a negative effect on the show. “The problem became that whenever I said something that was in contrast to what we’d shot in the past, people thought I was lying. They didn’t think I was a variant, they thought I was being disingenuous.” The original “Daredevil” series is one of the best superhero shows of all time, but it was also incredibly gritty and violent due to focusing on organized crime rather than world-saving antics. So it was important to Cox and his co-star Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Wilson Fisk, to make sure “Born Again” had a similar tone.
Vincent D’Onofrio said Marvel chief Kevin Feige backed the overhaul
Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were the ones leading the charge on pumping the brakes on “Daredevil: Born Again” in 2023 when they didn’t think it was heading in the right direction, which makes sense given that they’re the two key faces of the revival series. But they also had the full support of Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito.
“We as a group of creatives had meetings with the bosses, and because those guys are creatives, they joined us in this endeavor to turn things around,” D’Onofrio told Reel Rejects in June 2026. “Feige and D’Esposito, they back us 100% creatively. They give us complete freedom. They never have once told us to back off, ever. They just keep saying, ‘Make it better, make it better.'”
It’s interesting, then, that the Marvel Disney+ show will end with its third season, and Marvel has not renewed its contract with showrunner Dario Scardapane. It’s unclear what his exit will mean for the series, which hadn’t finished post-production at the time the news made its way online in September 2026. But it seems like the show is aiming to go out on a high, as D’Onofrio also told Reel Rejects: “We are trying our hardest to make it different than the other two [seasons]. But at the same time, it’s super ‘Daredevil’-esque.”
