Marshals Stands on Its Own, But Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone Past Explains a Lot

It still surprises me how many people who are watching Marshals are in the dark about Kayce Dutton’s past.

While it is possible to watch Marshals without having seen Yellowstone, understanding his history helps the story snap into place.

If you’ve only just become a fan of Kayce, here’s some background that may help you understand him — and the story — a bit more.

(Fred Hayes/CBS)

Kayce Dutton is the youngest of five children. His father, John Dutton, came from a long line of Duttons who made their way to Montana, beginning in 1883, which is both a year and a prequel series to Yellowstone.

Yellowstone takes us on a journey with John and two other children, Jamie and Beth.

I don’t want to spoil the whole story for you because there is a lot to unpack. Suffice it to say that the family has always fought hard for what they believe in as the conservator of the largest ranch in Montana.

Kayce’s mother died tragically when he was a young boy. His eldest brother died at the beginning of Yellowstone, and it was one of his life events that brought him back to the family he had long before escaped.

The Duttons aren’t loving in the way we understand love. To each other, they are loyal, often to a fault.

Their ranch hands are absorbed into the family as more than employees, by battle testing their loyalty to the Duttons and their ranch. When they’re admitted to the little club, they are branded, carrying the Y representing the ranch for life.

It’s a brutal way of life, and Kayce’s early years were enough to send him running far from his family. Kayce has that brand, a reminder of how his father viewed him and why he tried putting it behind him. He joined the Navy, became a SEAL, and through his SEAL team brotherhood, reclaimed his soul.

He also married Monica, a Native American from the nearby Broken Rock Reservation in Montana. Kayce kept that part of his life separate from his family and the ranch until Yellowstone Season 1.

What quickly became apparent is how deeply all three Dutton children craved their father’s approval.

Kayce’s journey throughout Yellowstone forced him to confront both the pride and darkness of being a Dutton, but it also gave him permission to forge his own path.

By doing that, he was imperative in how Yellowstone ended as a series — as Kayce brokered a deal returning the land of the Yellowstone to Broken Rock, allowing him and his sister to walk away to new lives (and new series: Marshals and Dutton Ranch).

On Marshals Season 1 Episode 1, we learned about Monica’s death. It wasn’t surprising that she wasn’t included in this next chapter.

She was a divisive character on the best days, but Kayce did love her deeply, despite fans often being split between seeing Monica as Kayce’s moral compass or as an obstacle to the Yellowstone drama.

He’s learning to be a single father to Tate and how to navigate life without his soulmate.

That’s why Pete Calvin’s arrival in Montana has been so monumental to Kasey. As he outlined on Marshals Season 1 Episode 11, he had only felt entirely accepted two times in his life — through his SEAL Team brotherhood and in his marriage to Monica.

If Kayce was unsure of himself after Monica’s death, and we can assume he was, even if we didn’t see how it unfolded, then reuniting with his SEAL Team brother was like a lifeline.

Kayce had previous experience with law enforcement as the Commissioner of the Montana Livestock Association, and he took his job seriously.

That was a lot harder than it might seem, particularly if you are only now watching Marshals without understanding Kayce’s journey on Yellowstone.

You see, John Dutton — and his family before him as shown on 1883 and 1923 — put nothing ahead of saving the ranch. Even family took a backseat to preserving the land and what they believe to be the Montana way of life.

Ranching and cowboys are becoming less of America every day, and John was holding onto that way of life with an iron fist.

Murder was not off the table. In fact, it was seen as a necessity, and because of the unincorporated, lawless stretch of land affectionately called the Train Station, they buried the bodies with impunity.

Early during Marshals Season 1, we saw Kayce use that sacred space when he got in a bit of trouble by killing someone. Considering how hard he had tried to escape his family’s legacy, it was a surprise that he fell back into old patterns so easily.

That contradiction has become one of Marshals’ most interesting tensions: Kayce wants to escape the Dutton legacy, but violence is still the language he learned first.

Marshals Season 1 Episode 8 brought the SEAL team brotherhood under the spotlight again when Garrett, aka Double G, arrived, carrying with him decades of baggage after holding Cal responsible for one of their teammates’ deaths.

But when Cal was feeling death at his door, he revealed the truth of the matter. It wasn’t Cal’s call at all. On that fateful day, Double G told Cal that their teammate was dead, and Cal put his death in the rear-view mirror to focus on saving everyone else.

Keeping that secret is likely what will also drive Cal to keep Kayce’s other secret — the train station and how the Dutton family utilized it.

In his review of the episode, Denis wondered if Cal was using self-defense or purposely let the bad guy fall into the icy pond to save his SEAL team brother. I think it was a bit of both.

You don’t survive such things without making moral sacrifices, and with Double G’s life on the line (he subsequently died in the hospital), it’s unsurprising that Cal would make a questionable decision to spare Kayce’s future.

They had all suffered for years after the first bad call. Perhaps this will wipe the slate clean.

Can Kayce fully pull himself out of the Dutton legacy of death and destruction done in the name of land and a way of life? Perhaps Marshals Season 2 will explore that. Hopefully, we have many years ahead with Kayce and his Marshals team to see how it all plays out.

(Fred Hayes/CBS)

Kayce was the baby of the Dutton family, and his heart was the purest. But being surrounded by darkness takes its toll on you. Only by inviting the light into your life can you change your fate.

Cal’s return and the new friends Kayce is making in the Marshals service may be the salvation he has been waiting for all his life.

Hopefully, this helps you understand Kayce’s journey a little bit better. It’s painted with broad strokes, but you have the summer months to explore the rest of the Dutton legacy with Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923.

Is it worth the effort? Absolutely. Not only will it help you navigate Kayce’s new life, but it will keep you entertained until Marshals returns.
