Willis Carrier didn’t set out to make summer bearable; he was just trying to fix a printing problem.

In the summer of 1902, the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company in Brooklyn was facing a crisis. High humidity in their plant caused printing paper to absorb moisture, expand, and warp. Colours misaligned, ruining images. Production ground to a halt.

Willis Carrier, a 25-year-old engineer fresh out of Cornell University, was given the job of reducing the humidity at the printing company. While waiting for a train on a foggy night at a Pittsburgh station, he had a sudden realization. As air passed over a cool surface it released its moisture. If he could cool the air, he could reduce humidity.

He built a system that drew air through coils filled with cold water. As the warm air cooled, its moisture condensed on the coils and drained away, leaving behind dry, cooled air. On July 17, 1902, Carrier completed the drawings for the world’s first modern electrical air conditioning system. In 1906, Carrier was granted a patent for an Apparatus for Treating Air, the world’s first spray-type air conditioning equipment. It was designed to humidify or dehumidify air, heating water for the first function and cooling it for the second.

His accidental solution to a paper problem fundamentally altered human civilization. Initially, air conditioning was used in factories, enabling high-yield production in textiles, pharmaceuticals, printing, and eventually electronics. Subsequently it transformed architecture and urban design. Glass-walled skyscrapers and sealed indoor shopping centres became possible only because interior spaces could be artificially climate-controlled. Year-round climate control eliminated summer slowdowns in factories and offices, dramatically increasing global worker productivity.

It led to migration. Air conditioning transformed inhospitable climates into economic powerhouses, driving massive population shifts to regions like the US Sunbelt, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

What began as a clever fix for wrinkled paper ended up reshaping where humanity lives, works, and builds.
